Tip(s) of the Day! January 28, 2008

Another email sent these tips my way, and there are a couple that have worked for me. The Dawn for fleas and the Bounce for fresh smelling- these also work on cats, but I only recommend bathing the cat if you are absolutely desperate, the cat is filthy, or allergic to flea collars or the other types of flea meds. If you must bathe your cat, be prepared for serious skin injury, and possible loss of eyes or limbs! LOL

2e202a.jpgEliminate ear mites. All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil in your cat’s ear…Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat’s skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.

2e2049.jpgKills fleas instantly…Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog’s bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Good-bye fleas.

2e2059.jpgRainy day cure for dog odor ..Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

Did You Know that drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately– without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional “pain relievers.”

2e2069.jpgDid you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.

2e2078.jpgBefore you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They’ll clear up your stuffed nose.

2e2088.jpgAchy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.

2e2098.jpg2e20a7.jpgSore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

2e20b7.jpgCure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly– even though the product was never been advertised for this use.

2e20c6.jpgHoney remedy for skin blemishes .. Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.

2e20d6.jpgListerine therapy for toenail fungus. Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

Easy eyeglass protection… To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

2e20e6.jpgCleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer … If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can’t find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.

2e20f5.jpgSmart splinter remover. Just pour a drop of Elmer’s Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.

2e2105.jpgHunt’s tomato paste boil cure ..cover the boil with Hunt’s tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.

2e2115.jpgBalm for broken blisters… To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine. a powerful antiseptic.

2e2124.jpgVinegar to heal bruises … Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.

2e2134.jpgQuaker Oats for fast pain relief… It’s not for breakfast any more! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

look at you, with the all the groovy home remedies! I love it! I’m going to have to book mark this page for quick reference!

  2. Great tips! I love the cat commentary. I used to have a cat, and have certainly experienced the serious bodily injury while bathing! And not to mention, they look like pityful, half-drowned water rats, after being soaked in a tub!

But now I have dogs . . .who do get a little stinky from time to time–I should really give the dryer sheet a shot!

    Do you think it’s safe???

Most of these are waaay less expensive than the alternatives, and most of us have at least some of these things already. Anything to make life simpler!

I have used dryer sheets on dogs and cats, and never had any adverse reactions. But I wouldn’t use any sheets with a super strong scent, either, you know? Some of those may irritate.
Just use one sheet per dog and rub it on their backs and sides. Of course, if the dog has any open cuts, bites, etc., or anything, I wouldn’t recommend it. But otherwise, it shouldn’t hurt them!

I had to bathe my cats a time or two and I would rather poke out my own eyes, I think. LOL It was AWFUL!

The listerine for toenail fungus is a decent tip but it doesn’t work for all cases. You also have to be careful and not get the blue version because it has caused some comedy time in turning your feet blue. Listerine has thymol in it which seems to be the active ingredient in helping to kill toenail fungus.

I am glad to see there are great sites like yours talking about toenail fungus and the possible cures.
I would be interested in writing a article for your site it would be original content.

    keep up the good work
